DR. Reynold L. Trowers, M.D. F.A.C.E.P.

   Dr. Trowers is the Director of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Harlem Hospital Center. Dr. Trowers was born and raised in New York City. He completed his premedical and medical education at Brown University in Providence, R.I. Upon completion of medical school, he returned to N.Y.C. for residency training at Metropolitan and Harlem Hospital Center. He is board certified in Emergency and Internal Medicine.

Dr. Trowers began working as an attending physician in the Emergency Service at Harlem Hospital Center in 1982. In 1986, he became the Chief of Emergency Services and in 1992 Dr. Trowers was chosen to lead the department as Director.

Dr. Trowers is now responsible for the delivery of medical care for emergency adult, pediatrics and psychiatric patients. As a level one trauma center, burn center, pediatric trauma center, stroke, sexual assault and post cardiac arrest hypothermic center, he is responsible for maintaining and improving quality of care. His responsibilities also include maintaining regulatory standards and developing unique programs designed to meet the considerable needs of the Harlem community. A major focus of his efforts is directed to improve patient safety and enhance the important relationship between prehospital and emergency department staff.

In addition to his position as E.D. Director, he also has also served as the Paramedic Medical Director at the Harlem Based EMS Stations for many years. He holds faculty positions at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, and the CCNY/Harlem, and Mercy College Physician Assistant Programs. Dr. Trowers is the Emergency Preparedness co-chair for Harlem Hospital and he is the Associate Director of the Trauma Service. He is adjunct faculty at the F.D.N.Y., E.M.S. Academy and Rockland Community and LaGuardia Community College Paramedic Training Programs. He currently serves as the medical director for the Bed. Stuyvesant, volunteer ambulance corp.

His research interests include; cancer screening in the E.D. setting, asthma, domestic violence risk assessments, and patterns of drug abuse. He has contributed to many journal submissions and textbook chapters.

Dr. Trowers has for the last several years captained the mile 21-aid station at the N.Y.C. Marathon. Over the last three years he has served as medical captain at the marathon finish line tent. He has also been involved in medical support and coordination of several athletic events including the New York City Half Marathon, Harlem 10K run, Harlem Renaissance 5 mile classic, the Corporate Challenge series and N.Y.C. Triathlon.

Dr. Trowers’ personal interests include triathlon participation, violin playing and church related activities. He is very committed to teaching and promoting preventive care and heart healthy activities. He has recently completed his certification as a personal fitness trainer.
