Diane Sixsmith, MD obtained her bachelor's degree from Trinity College in Washington, D.C. in 1969. She then attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine from which she obtained her medical degree in 1973. In 1977 she obtained a Master of Public Health degree from the Columbia University School of Public Health. Dr. Sixsmith undertook internship at the Harlem Hospital Center and completed the residency in Internal Medicine at the same institution in 1976.

She has authored chapters for textbooks that deal with accidents and emergencies as well as food poisoning. She has also been co-principal investigator for for an HEW grant on the utilization of health resources because of the complications of drug abuse.
